ADD/ADHD

The primary characteristics of ADD/ADHD are inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. These characteristics may be demonstrated in various behaviours such as: difficulty concentrating or holding attention, easily distracted or trouble maintaining focus, impulsive behaviour, constant squirming or fidgeting, and trouble staying organized or planning ahead.

children with ADHD

If your child exhibits the symptoms of ADD/ADHD, consider chiropractic.

The majority of ADD/ADHD cases are in fact states of imbalance to our nervous system, rather than disorders. Irritation to the nervous system from physical, chemical and emotional stressors can result in “sympathetic dominance” – a state of being where your child is constantly in the “flight or fight” response, leading to hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity.

With the children, the earlier nervous system balance is achieved, the greater their ability to `re-wire` their interaction with the environment.

Traditional Management

Administration of nervous system stimulant drugs is the most common approach to ADD/ADHD, and may provide some immediate changes. However, many side effects are associated with these drugs including anxiety, changes in personality, nervousness, vision and sleep problems, psychosis, digestive issues, etc. The effects of psychostimulant medications are also not sustainable in the long run, resulting in stronger dosage prescription over time which may lead to potentially more side effects.

The Chiropractic Approach

Misalignments of the spinal vertebrae cause disruption of proper communication between the brain and the
body. Physical stressors such as birth trauma, chemical stressors such as medication or poor diet, and
emotional stressors such as anxiety can all lead to spinal misalignments (subluxations).

These misalignments compromise the normal functioning of nerves and can negatively influence your well being, and in the case of ADD/ADHD, contributing to a state of sympathetic dominance. By correcting spinal misalignments in the neck, your chiropractor will help restore balance to the nervous system and begin to activate the opposite response to “fight or flight” in children with ADD/ADHD.

In addition your chiropractor will recommend other lifestyle modifications to support nervous system balance.

By removing lifestyle and environmental stressors, as well as addressing the physical and neurological components with chiropractic care, parents often notice significant improvements in ADD/ADHD symptoms.
